Transport company Gunnar Knutsen's gas-powered truck

Liquefied biogas wins public tenders

Gunnar Knutsen AS in Oslo has long understood the advantage of operating sustainable transport. Today, 50 of their 81 trucks runs on biogas. Trucks that help the company to win public tenders in Greater Oslo.

“We have invested heavily in trucks powered by liquefied biogas. This is partly very good for the climate and partly a fuel that allows us to deliver more effective transport solutions for our customers the whole day,” says Frank Verner Vestveit at Gunnar Knutsen.

Gunnar Knutsen operates in Greater Oslo within a radius of 80 to 100 kilometers. The company’s trucks transport excavation materials, rocks and earth from construction sites. It’s important to be able to plan runs so that no-one has to stand about waiting.

“We undertake many short trips, but our trucks also need to drive 400 to 500 kilometers a day without refueling stops. This is where liquefied biogas has a major advantage compared to other fuels.”

Gunnar Knutsen AS is part of the NRC Group, which has closely followed development on the fuel markets in recent years. There was ultimately only one fossil-free fuel that could meet the group’s highest requirements.

“No other renewable fuel can compare with liquefied biogas. Today, 50 of our 81 trucks are biogas fueled. We can already see that our biogas-powered trucks are a competitive edge. Many public procurers want to reach their sustainability goals and at the same time society is demanding change. Everyone must pull together for the sake of the climate.”

Besides this, Frank Verner Vestveit sees another important advantage in metropolitan areas.

“We run many transports back and forth to Oslo. This means toll exemption is a great advantage, and something which also benefits our customers. But even the gas price is a competitive advantage."

Anyone interested can locate existing and planned filling stations in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

“As for expansion of the liquefied biogas filling station network, Norway is a bit behind the other Nordics and Europe. But we think development is heading in the right direction. Gasum will soon start building a biogas network both in Oslo and the rest of Norway."
