Terminal Manager Tommy Borgaas: No two days are the same

I work at Gasum as a terminal manager for our LNG terminal in Øra, Norway. This means I’m responsible for all operational activities at the terminal, including safety, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and ensuring continuous uptime. I manage a small team of operators and ensure that we follow all laws and regulations while maintaining a safe working environment. Since LNG is highly flammable, safety is a top priority in everything we do. We also need to be prepared for emergencies, such as shutdowns, and make sure we have enough energy supply, which includes managing weekly ship discharges. I’m also responsible for ensuring we stay within the annual budget set by management.

I’ve always wanted to work in the gas and oil industry. I studied process and chemical engineering for three years before completing a two-year apprenticeship, gaining hands-on experience as a laboratory technician and process operator. I started working as a team leader in 2012 for a company that later became part of Gasum through a gradual acquisition. Over time, I took on more and more responsibilities, which eventually led me to my current position.

What motivates me most about my job is the constant change — no two days are ever the same. Every day brings new challenges, moving parts, and things that need to be planned and fixed. Throughout my years at the terminal, there has always been an ongoing project, whether it’s an expansion, system upgrade, or integration of new technology. There’s a strong sense of innovation in my role, and I’ve seen significant developments over the years.

Many people might not realize how much Gasum focuses on sustainability and innovation. We invest heavily in new technologies and biogas facilities, constantly improving and expanding our operations.

Gasum has continuously entrusted me with more responsibilities, allowing me to be involved in major projects, leadership training, and workshops. I’ve also had opportunities to travel to different Gasum sites, collaborate with colleagues across business units, and engage in open discussions on various topics.
