Kim Åberg: From a technician to Plant Manager

As soon as Kim Åberg started working at Gasum, he knew the company was a place where he would like to make a career. Now he works as Plant Manager at the new Götene biogas plant in Sweden.

I first came across biogas when I was working as a mechanic with farming equipment, such as tractors. When there was a job opening at Gasum’s biogas plant in my hometown Lidköping, I applied for the position. I started my work as a technician there in 2020 and knew quite quickly that this was a company where I could see myself making a career. Working at a biogas plant is versatile and I felt like it fulfilled my ambition as a technician.

"Even though Gasum is a big employer, our internal communication and the atmosphere has always been extremely welcoming and warm. We are almost like a big family."

Kim Åberg, Gasum

I knew I wanted to advance in my career, so when the plan to open a new biogas plant in 2024 in Götene was published, I told that I could take on some new responsibilities. As the plant manager I make sure everything runs as it should. I make sure we have all the routines, processes, and work directives in place. I also help around the plant wherever I’m needed from technical work to cleaning and I also make sure everyone knows about our safety procedures and safety walks. I had a very good plant manager in Lidköping and I regard him as my go-to person and even a role model in my new position.

As an employer Gasum has been extremely supportive. I don’t have a formal technical training so I have learnt a lot through my work. Gasum has provided me with all the necessary courses regarding microbiology, safety, and licences, for example. I’m also attending a leadership course. Even though Gasum is a big employer, our internal communication and the atmosphere has always been extremely welcoming and warm. We are almost like a big family.

Gasum isn’t that well-known in Sweden but I knew something about the company prior to joining because of the plant in Lidköping. However, I didn’t know that Gasum is owned by the Finnish state. It’s also been good to realize that Gasum has a clear agenda. They are striving to make a difference in the long run.
