Joonas Juura: From the ground up

Joonas serves as the production manager for Finland’s biogas plant operations at Gasum, overseeing nine facilities and ensuring smooth production. With a background in environmental biotechnology and years of experience, he thrives on tackling challenges in renewable energy while staying connected to the daily operations on the ground.

At Gasum, I work as the production manager for Finland’s biogas plant operations. In this role, I oversee our nine plant managers, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and production stays on track across all facilities. My primary office is at Gasum's headquarters in Espoo, but practically every week I travel to at least one of our biogas plants. During these visits, I typically walk through the site with the plant manager, ensuring that all ongoing projects are proceeding as planned and discussing any current issues. I also try to chat with as many plant operators as possible during my time there. Their insights from the field are always valuable for staying connected to the daily operations.

"Gasum's business involves much more than natural gas like a lot of things related to circular economy."

Joonas Juura, Gasum

I joined Gasum in 2016 through an acquisition of a biogas plant and I was made the plant group manager. This was part of an organizational change in connection with the acquisition, in which Finnish biogas plants were divided into plant groups. I held this position for several years before transitioning to a maintenance manager role, which I held for two and a half years. In 2024, I stepped into my current position. I truly enjoyed my previous roles, but I’m finding this supervisory position even more rewarding.

One thing I really appreciate about Gasum is that when they notice an employee who is motivated and has the potential to advance in their career, they usually create opportunities for them to grow and move forward.

I am especially motivated by the fact that I get to work in a job that corresponds exactly with my education. I studied environmental biotechnology at Häme University of Applied Sciences, where my main focus was on biogas. My studies provided me with a lot of tools that I still use in my work to this day.

It comes as a surprise to many that Gasum's business involves much more than natural gas like a lot of things related to circular economy. Fortunately, awareness of the potential of biogas is growing by leaps and bounds, and biogas-fueled trucks, for example, are increasingly visible on the road. The more logistics companies choose completely renewable fuel to fill up their tanks, the greater the positive impact it has on our environment.
